Avatar Wars!!

The Avatar war has begun.  Here is an opportunity to practice blogging AND earn a late homework pass by participating in the Avatar Wars.  Here is what you need to do: Find a very cool Avatar, upload it, and write why you choose the Avatar.  Every aspect of your post has to be correct, so go back and check out the requirements for posting.  The late homework pass earned can be used on one late assignment for full credit-if turned the next day… Do not give me a lame one liner.. “I chose the avatar because it is cool and I like kittens..” Talk about the process of chosing the Avatar and what statement are you attempting to make using the Avatar.  I will not give credit to poorly constructed write ups; represent yourself as a mature, intelligent, high school student. Let the Avatar War commence… :)

I assume this is where I post about this? And am I supposed to be able to see my avatar?

Anyways, I chose this avatar because it represents my entire high school life. Drumline, drumline, and more drumline. I don’t have much of an after school life because we have so many practices and for so long. This was the best decision I have made yet though. Drumming for me is my “happy place” of sorts. I’m not sure what I would even do with myself if I never started drumming.

This might be a ridiculous question but I don’t see where to upload an avatar…I’m not familiar with this kind of stuff…help?

Hi Mc, Good job being the first to post an avatar. I am accepting your post, not because it is constructed perfect, but it is the first post- lucky you. Those of you who will be participating in Avatar Wars keep in mind I am looking for a response that covers the following requirements: Discuss the process of choosing the avatar. Discuss what statement you are making about yourself by using your avatar. I can only give you credit if I know who you are- first initial, last initial, class period. Best of luck finding the avatar that best suits you… :)

At first when I was thinking about my avatar nothing was really popping up– but then I asked myself, “What do I love doing?”
I am Amy and I love spending time with friends and family, laying out in the sunshine, chinese food and movie night, playing basketball, and music. So now I’m asking myself, “What out of those do I chose now?” Well, I chose a sunset because it reminded me of when our whole family is together (when my borther and sister come home from college). My siblings are my bestest friends and in the summer the whole family always eat dinner outside while the sun is setting.
Sunsets remind me of my family and friends, the most important people in my world.

My avatar represents my religion. At first when I was thinking about what my avatar should be, I was leaning towards a physical activity I enjoy: either lacrosse or muy thai. However, when thinking further I decided I wanted something that represented who I am and what I am going to be for the rest of my life. That is why i choose my avatar, a tallit. In the jewish religion when a boy turns 13 years old, he has a Bar-Mitzvah, welcoming him as a man in the jewish community. In the beginning of the Bar-Mitzvah service the boy is presented with his first tallit. The tallit is handmade and has 613 knotted fringes that represent the 613 laws of Judaism. When accepting the tallit and wearing it, there is a covenant between the boy, turned man, and god, saying he will follow the rules as close as possible. This avatar represents who I am.

I think I figured out the avatar concept!
When thinking about what avatar would best represent me soccer was the first thing that came to mind. Anyone who knows me from los al–or anywhere for that matter–knows that I play soccer. I have played since I was five and loved it ever since so nothing seemed more fitting than a soccer ball with a smile on its face. I am making the statement about myself that I know I am a soccer player and that is what I will always be even after I hang up my cleats; I will never cease to be an athlete at heart.

Through this assignment, I was able to discover that I had a variety of avatars to represent me! Out of the variety, I felt that the nail polish avatar connected with me the most. Many people may think painting one’s nails is either for a person who has plenty of time on their hands and a way for girls to attract attention. At first, I started painting my nails for those main reasons; however, as I grew older, I understood why this became a hobby I still continue doing to this day. Everyone finds their own method/way of dealing with their hardships or burdens (stress), I am able to vent and shimmer down through painting my nails. When painting one’s nails, one must focus on not smearing, not applying too many coats and not doing anything before the paint dries. By focusing on the detailed strokes, the 5 minutes I spend on painting my nails clears the clutter in my head and takes the heavy weight that was before on my shoulders(:
Painting my nails is not only a stress-relieving activity but a way to express myself.

I spend a considerable amount of time doing homework, helping out at my church, and playing sports with my friends. But these activities take so much energy from me that i often feel like lying down on my bed and just resting. To combat whatever stresses my mind, i go play my upright kawai piano in my family room. And when i open up the cover and press that one random note, i feel so excited. i realize that i can play whatever i want, whether it is chopsticks or moonlight sonata; i feel comfortable to sit there, let my fingers move, and think. So, i chose piano keys as my avatar because i am a music lover and i play my piano a lot, spending an hour or two playing any tunes that i know. Time goes by so fast when i play, and afterwards, i feel fine and relaxed and ready to finish whatever work that i had started.

With the macabre idea of a dying world, the melancholy cries of genocide, murder, and suicide, and the malevolence of an ignorant race all around me, I wanted to represent myself with a pure, unadulterated image of the tranquility of life, of nature. When I sat down after listening to some of the stories of my father–the ones that every one has; those that rattle your bone and shatter your soul, those that begin with innocence and end with death–I began to ponder a question I have had for a while: what is the most unadulterated, most trusting, most innocent thing it the world? The idea provided the basis for my avatar; it was nature, the landscape of a world we as humans have destroyed and saved and destroyed. It never asks anything in return for its natural resources; it never tries to hide its discontent; it never lies; it does cry, fear, and die. It erodes as we do, it gives life as we do, and it creates and destroys as we do. I’d like to think, though, that it does so not for greed, pride, envy, or wrath, but rather because it needs to; its based on instinct or a cosmic energy if you choose to believe so; it does not have cognitive thought; right or wrong, good and evil are not buried deep beneath a brain or a soul if you choose to believe humans have one. It has no choice like our consecrated race; it does not decide to pull that trigger, detonate that bomb, or release that napalm. Ansel Adam’s representation of nature is based on its purity, its patterns, and how it can create a vehement sense of self-worth, or lack there of. Photography, like painting and literature, tries to capture something as it is or as it should be. It can be manipulated to instilled fear or curiosity or it can be taken in the most candid form to make life as naked as possible. I want to reveal that through photography and writing because the truth is most important; without it life is meaningless.

I chose this strange donkey avatar because it effectively takes a handful of my character traits and puts them into a single image. First, like the donkey, i am a stubborn individual who is skeptical of even minute details. I am not easily affected by peer pressure nor am I one to stray far from my long-established code of ethics. Also, the donkey avatar encapsulates my quirkiness and sense of humor. Just looking at the avatar made me laugh, showing me that it was a perfect choice. Lastly, I have braces, but still feel confident about myself; so i feel that the donkey’s buck teeth and blatantly obnoxious smile connect with my physical appearance.

Throughout my life people have wondered what I am. What race, what religion? My avatar represents who people never can understand how I am this. My avatar shows my love for my religion although I may not look Jewish and the fact that I’m only half, I believe completely in Judaism. I like to say that I am half Jewish and half Buddhist, most people ask how can you be two religions, my response is that I view Buddhism not as a religion but as a philosophy (a way of life) in this way I am able to believe in both Judaism and Buddhism. I tried to find an image that incorporated both Judaism and Buddhism but none resembled any ideas I had in mind. The image I had in mind would have been an image of both the Israeli flag along with the Vietnamese flag together in one image, this image would be able to resemble both races in which I come from. I enjoy both cultures in which I come from and I accept all the traditions that go along with each cultural event on either side of my family.

I chose this avatar beause i like the game castle crashers and i don’t really care what my avatar looks like. I just wanted something simple. I don’t want people to know my religon, ot that much about my life. My life is something personal, and that’s what it’s going to remain. I chose this avatar because it’s simple and not very revealing. Just the way I like it.

I made an error. …know my religon OR that much…

After spending over twenty minutes looking for my avatar, I finally came up with what best represents me. Phew…and it is, I know, a blank sheet. I know it’s really funny, but that is me. I am a blank piece of paper ready to be filled in with new experiences and discoveries I make over time. Although I have gone through a lot so far, I feel that they are more like scratch work. I am still practicing to live my life the way I need to and want to, and this will continue on until the end of high school. Until I throw myself out into the real world and begin to truly pursue my dream, what represents me will be a blank sheet.

    Sorry that was dumb

It did not take a very long time to find my avatar. I simply googled “Franklin the turtle” and scanned through all the pictures to find the best one. Since the first grade, people have been associating me with Franklin the turtle, on the once popular television show. This used to bother me, but i have learned to adopt the nickname and it fits me well. At times i am slow, just like the stereotypical turtle. Turtles have also been used to show determination, like the childhood story of the turtle and the hair. Just like the turtle in the story, i am a consistent worker once my mind is set on a goal. For these various reasons, i felt that a turtle fit my personality perfectly.

Finding my avatar was easy, but the croping wasn’t working at first and was really frustrating but i figured it out…..eventually :) So my avatar is the band Blink 182 (but a cartoon version) and they have been my favorite band since i was 5-6 years old. I think that growing up listening to this band, and following them as much as i do, really made me the person i am today. From my, immature jokes haha, to knowing and understanding music. A lot of my friends aren’t really big fans of Blink, and say there music sucks and such, well i guess my statement is that you shouldn’t care of what other people think about something that YOU like. If your proud of something that you enjoy, then i think you should express your interest in a, respectful manner. So anyways, making my point short, you shouldn’t dislike something just cause your friends take bad about it.
